What causes it?
Dandruff is caused by factors such as an overgrowth of yeast on the scalp called Malassezia, seborrheic dermatitis, dry skin, sensitivity to hair care products, and poor scalp hygiene.
- Malassezia: This is a type of yeast that is naturally present on the scalp. An overgrowth of Malassezia can lead to dandruff.
- Seborrheic dermatitis: This is a common skin condition that causes red, itchy, and flaky skin. It can occur on the scalp and contribute to dandruff.
- Dry skin: If the scalp becomes excessively dry, it can result in flaking and dandruff.
- Sensitivity to hair care products: Some individuals may develop dandruff due to an adverse reaction to certain hair care products, such as shampoos or styling products.
- Poor scalp hygiene: Not washing the hair regularly or not cleaning the scalp properly can lead to the accumulation of dead skin cells and oils, contributing to dandruff.
How to treat dandruff:
- Anti-dandruff shampoos: These shampoos can sometimes be drying to the hair, so make sure to focus on applying them directly onto the scalp. Tip: Put your hair in sections.
Ingredients: Salicylic acid, Sulfur, zinc pyrithione.
- Maintaining good scalp hygiene: Wash your hair regularly (once a week) with a gentle shampoo, avoid excessive use of styling products that can build up on the scalp, and gently massage the scalp while shampooing to help remove any flakes.
